Hello and happy Autumn! The most colourful season of the year is finally in full swing and we thought it would be the perfect time to do some scrap busting crafting. When I make beautiful clothes, no matter how carefully I cut, I always seem to be left with odd bits and bobs of fabric that I never know what to do with. One of the reasons I make my own clothes is to be more sustainable and ethical so it seems such a waste to throw the scraps in the bin. And so, I decided to put together a cute little autumnal cushion made with all the scrappy autumn fabrics I had lying around. Follow my tutorial below to make your own super simple scrappy cushion!
Step One:
Measure your cushion inner and divide your measurements by three for your squares. Add a 1cm seam allowance either side of your squares. For example – my cushion inner measured 45cm by 45cm so the squares needed to be 15cm by 15cm. I added a 1cm seam allowance all around the square which made them 17cm by 17cm. Cut out 6 squares in your three fabrics so you have 18 squares in total.
Step Two:
Sew the squares together in rows as you want them to appear on your cushion cover. Make sure none of the rows have the same coloured squares touching each other.
Step Three:
Sew the rows together so you have two squares of nine square patches.
Step Four:
Pin the two squares of patchwork right sides together on three sides of the cushion. If your cushion has a directional print you want to sew the two sides and the top of the cushion leaving the bottom open.
Step Five:
Turn up the bottom of the cushion (the side you didn’t sew) up by 5mm and press. Turn up again by 10mm and press. Sew in place.
Step Six:
Use your sewing machine to create three evenly spaced button holes along the bottom front of your cushion. Once these are done, cut them open and line up your buttons on the inside of the bottom of the back piece (see photo below). Sew on your buttons.
Step Seven:
Put your cushion inner inside your cover and enjoy your super cute scrappy seasonal cushion!
